Emily - Great piece! It makes me want to get involved. I so often tend to the intellectual side (read: discussing) or overwhelmed by the immensity of the problem and it's nice to see some proactive things being done.

As a bus rider and biodiesel user, I have tended to shrug my shoulders. But the reality is it will affect me (buses run on oil too).

But I believe this is the only way people are going to change. Most are too busy consuming to pay much attention. So they need to be shocked to their senses.

"As far as other fuels, coal is the last thing we want to be burning more of what with global warming, nuclear is a really pricey and scary option, natural gas has peaked, and hydrogen is a joke (it's a fuel carrier, not a fuel source)."

For anybody not familiar wih the subject that comment is somewhat confuseypants. What you actually mean is:

...and hydrogen is a joke (its an energy carrier, not an energy source)

ie. hydrogen is a fuel, not a primary energy source. There are no hydrogen wells.

Indeed. I found Powerdown to be a very accessible outline of the whole situation. I live in a university community, yet I find that almost no one knows about peak oil, or if they do know about it, they don't want to think about it. We've gotten very attached to our unsustainable lifestyle.

Nicely stated. This is a critical issue and I second Powerdown. It is one of the most accessible, yet complete, information sources I have found.

Peak oil and global warming are intimately interlinked for me. The destruction of one resources transmutes the environment in a variety of ways.

The only hope I see in changing course - culturally, economically, politically, is through people demanding such a change. It is clear that politicians in the US will not step up to the plate, and as the G* summit shows - other leaders are willing to compromising with "talking" some more.
