irking me lately

  • I cannot catch up with the amount of reading due in my classes. There is never down-time because I should always be reading.
  • The dead pope on every channel, every newspaper cover, public radio every hour… Geesh, it’s as bad as when Ronald Reagan died.
  • All those Terri and pope and no mention of the war. The U.S. is still conducting a war that is still killing and traumatizing people and there is nary a mention anywhere in the mainstream news.
  • This morning on NPR, when the awesome Jane Fonda brought up the misogynistic patriarchy that contributes to girls’ and women’s “disease to please”, Susan Stamford said flabbergasted, “Misogyny, patriarchy, these terms you’re using, go back to 70’s feminism…a long time ago!” It reminds me of the argument I had with a man about rape. He was convinced that men rape women because their need to spread their seed is so overwhelming. When I called bullshit and asserted that rape had little to do with sex and everything to do with power dynamics, he yelped, “Power dynamics - that’s so 70’s!” What the hell? Did we all just wake up New Year’s Day, 1980 and all patriarchy and power play had vanished or something? Why are these very relevant paradigms suddenly so 30 years ago?
  • Now tell me this isn’t a result of millions of people stupidly using anti-bacterial soap instead of just regular old soap?
  • Durkheim…Durkheim and his sunny functionalism are really bugging me.

I’m so with you on the antibacterial soap. I refuse to have that stuff in my home.
