Terri Schiavo and political opportunism
There’s been so much great stuff written around blogdom on the Terri Schiavo situation. It’s really too bad she did not make her wishes known a long time ago, but like the vast majority of Americans, I too am not at all fooled by the sickening political opportunism of Republican Congresspeople. Bush rushes back early from vacation to sign emergency legislation to keep Schiavo alive and it took him how long to cough up a respectful amount of aid for tsunami victims? Cleis said it best in her comments:
I think that the Republicans’ primary motivation is to advance anti-abortion politics, to pander to their conservative base, and to disempower the judiciary. I think it’s fucked up that they would use the body of a dead woman to do that.
Amanda waxes insightful over at Pandagon:
Not to read too much into this, but it’s interesting to note that Terri Schiavo, who suffered from bulemia (sic), managed to hurt herself in a desperate attempt to please and even now she being trotted around like a show pony, her body relegated to nothing but an object for other people to project their desires onto.

Even though I’m on the other side as far as feeling that the right thing for Ms. Schiavo is that she should be fed, it’s certainly not the kind of issue that should inspire an emergency session of Congress and personal legislation.
