Just posted the 80’s cheese setlist. Who knew how eager you all would be to embarass yourselves, althought I notice no one put Air Supply; I may have to face the fact that I’m the only person my age who actually likes the song “Lost in Love”. I hope after you see the new setlist, you won’t lose all respect!

The other morning I met with the Sociology professor who’ll be facilitating my independent study next term. I described to him my topic: I want to study alternative paradigms of education, like unschooling and ecoliteracy, that have arisen to challenge and resist mainstream classroom-based schooling. So, basically, alternative education as social movement. I created an initial list of book sources (as an Amazon wishlist), partially based on what some of you suggested in the comments of this entry. I want to read and write with a national scope and then act on a local level, interviewing unschooling parents and sitting in on planning meetings of interesting new “schools” sprouting up in the Portland area. Here’s my collection of links so far.

It’s been a ragged day. I’m signing off.

A colossal task. As to the more in-action examples and ideas of such, God knows I’m six months out of the loop, but Portland alone has had a lot of independent/anti-establishment education movements in its history alone, and no shortage of community ideas that didn’t get off the ground.

I’ve had a bad day too, and don’t feel like looking up resources for you, but I remember that ye old Student Activism Alliance was putting a lot of time and effort into researching such movements/programs/paradigms and promoting/backing these alternatives on a variety of levels before they broke up, lots of obscure points, arguments and insights into the development of these. Many of the former members have certainly garnered huge amounts of information that could help you and I’m sure one or two are going to PSU. (And that’s only Portland in the last three years -I hear there’s all sorts of stuff that happened back in the 80s.)

…Well, anyway, good luck. And be sure to post more on this.
