Your Comfort

Jeremy’s mother is a crafty woman. By day, she’s a senior investment and accounts advisor at U.S. Bank; by night/weekend, she gives Martha a run for her money. When I started dating Jer years ago and visited his mom and stepdad’s house for the first time, I noticed the kitchen window curtains, placemats, door decorations, shower curtain, and coffee table doilies all coordinated with the closest upcoming holiday. I asked Jer about this and he replied that she had sets for every major holiday that she stored upstairs and rotated them out all year long. I’m sure I had a horrified look on my face. I said, “I really hope you don’t expect me to be as home-makey as your mom because it’s just not in me,” to which he replied, “Thank God!!”

We have half a closet full of holiday decorations that she’s given us to put up at our house that we: a) never put up and b) feel too guilty to give away. However, there is one thing for sure that she makes that gets used around here. For years, she’s been making lightweight, brightly patterned fleece blankets for friends and family - we have about five or so here at home. About a month ago, she decided to take the plunge and try to sell them…you know, for money. She spent a huge lump sum on fabric and has spent every spare moment the past few weeks sewing blankets to sell at a table at the Portland Christmas Expo that runs this weekend and next. In the future, she plans on selling her rice-filled neck warmers that we all love and scarves and things.

She asked me if I could throw together a quickie web page for her that could be printed on the business card she passes out with each blanket sold. So here’s what I spent a few hours on last night - Your Comfort.net. Yes, I designed the smiley logo and wrote all the copy, and believe me, I now know I have it in me to write phrases such as, “…blankets that feel like a hug!” It was kind of fun to get into total foo-foo mode to write the page, and I think it turned out cute. Today, Mary Ann’s nuts over the site and matching business cards Jer and I printed out. *grin*

    Hi Emily-
the parallels continue… Rich’s mom is also one of the craftiest women I know. I just recently decided that I want to learn to quilt, and luckily she came to visit for Thanksgiving and helped me adjust the sewing machine she gave me last year as a Christmas gift. We were supposed to have gone to that Christmas Expo today but she left a day early to avoid bad weather on the drive to California.

    btw, cute logo!

Well, hopefully not everyone will be going for the “Buy Nothing Christmas.” Otherwise all those blankets go to waste! :(

My God! She has made enough to stock half the stores in Portland. I love a person who puts her all into a project, and she certainly did.

Emily, nice job on the site!

Nice job on the website, Emily! Those blankets look very comfy … just the thing for a chilly morning like this one. Great work, and good luck to Jeremy’s mom.
