Lately, life

Hell, I’m tired. Sunday night I went with my friend, Cedric, to a 9pm Interpol show downtown. Of course, the band didn’t actually start playing until 10:15 (after two opening acts) and although they ended at 11:30 or so, we wandered out for food and conversation afterwards, putting me in bed at 3am. I had my first Soc. of Mental Illness exam yesterday, but I had already studied so well for it that my tiredness didn’t affect me. But wow, it’s affecting me this afternoon! (By the way, Interpol was tight. I totally dig their music and although the show was short, the sound was amazing.)

Classes are going well. I aced a really tough first Soc. Research Methods exam (70/72!). My History of Sexualities reading provides the most fascinating material of the term, and Soc. of Mental Illness, while a bit elementary, is a cakewalk. I’m kind of wondering why I even took the class; I think I thought it would add to my understanding, but face it, growing up a foster kid with a single bipolar mom was probably already the richest education I could get regarding the sociology of mental illness.

Speaking of Mom, I’ll be flying out to visit her in Fairfield for X-Mas. I haven’t spent December time with her in many years and this’ll be a seven day trip. The cool thing too is that so many peops from the “old gang” will be there simultaneously. Kari-Ann, my close friend since we were 11, flies out from Maine to visit her folks every X-Mas and this’ll be our first time seeing each other in almost four years. Friends Rachael and Hobbs are living in Fairfield, and my ex-bf whom I will always love to pieces, Bryce, is planning on cruising down in his vintage VW Bug from Iowa City (where he works in U of Iowa clinics) to visit us all. Damn, it’ll feel like ‘96 again.

For the first time in three years, my boss offered up use of his beach house in Pacific City this weekend to Jeremy and I. Jer feels he’ll be too busy, so I’m planning to go alone - I could use the solitude anyway. I’ll just lug my school books, iPod, a mini cooler of food, and some Shiraz along. It’s supposed to be deliciously stormy all weekend at the coast and the three-bedroom beach house is a gorgeous and peaceful place to hole up and read. The entire beach side of the house is covered with tall windows (with the master bedroom right next to them on the second floor) re are beac view windows I’ll take off Friday late afternoon and come home late Sunday afternoon in time to catch Cedric’s Cure cover band on Halloween night.

Oh, and I’ve decided on a 12″ G4 iBook upgraded to 512 RAM and a 60GB hard drive. With an educational discount, it comes to only $1100. I’ll be ordering it sometime in the next week! Thanks to all who gave me advice.

Congrats on the exam! Enjoy your visit with your mom. Oh, and congrats on the Mac, too - you might want to peek at my (somewhat belated) post on your October 21 query.
