sexuality and history topics
Of all of my new classes, by far the most interesting subject matter is in History of Sexualities. We’re taking a U.S.-centric look.
The final assignment, a ~10-page paper due at the end of the term, is a research paper based on secondary sources, with annotated bibliographies of journal articles due throughout the term. I’ve been spending some time today poking through the indexes of journals like Journal of the History of Sexuality, Gender and History, Feminist Studies, and Signs to get a feel for topics. Currently, I’m leaning toward an overview of the female orgasm in U.S. history, but if I cannot find enough on that topic, something along the lines of sex education and menstruation interests me. What topic would interest you? Think sexuality - history - U.S.

I’d look to see if there were enough material on “particular friendships” (those Victorian friendships where when the particular friend came to visit, the husband vacated the marital bed so that the wife and her friend could share the bed for the duration of the visit). I’m guessing that there isn’t sufficient secondary source material to justify a ten-page paper, however.
If not, then a treatment of the use of hysterectomy as a way to control various “female problems” could be interesting. (See “hysteria”.)
No? Okay, how about bundling? I’d be interested in knowing how that custom died out, actually.
Finally, how about body modifications for the purpose of enhancing sexual pleasure? You know, fads and fashions in piercings.

I like the orgasm idea. There’s an interesting paper in a recent issue of Hypatia (feminist philosophy journal), within the last year or so, by Nancy Tuana. Definitely have a look if you want to pursue the big O. Let me know if you want me to track down the bib info, but I think I’ve given you enough to find it.
I’m really interested in feminist reclaiming and revisioning of menstruation, a la Cunt and Lara Owen’s work….

Fantasy. There has to be some kind of erotica in our pioneering past.
Read in southern accent:
“The horses pulled the wagon unmanned through the empty plains of Nebraska with Paul and I in the back where he had hastily shoved aside our provisions for this westward journey. I lay upon my back in sinful anticipation when to my utter surprise Paul produced a feather and began making the beastly howlings of the red man, as he lay upon me then I saw in my mind as clear as day my remembrance of when a Native had been marched through our camp just a few days back. He was as naked as god had made him, all sun stained and rough, the ripples and bulges of his sinewy body moved when he walked, as did his healthy manhood…”
