weather chitchat
It is an inferno-like 100 degrees here today; very unusual for Portland. Of course, we don’t have air conditioning, so the name of the game is finding ways to keep cool (funny, that post was just about a year ago). July is my least favorite weather month here. I used to hate January in Iowa (bleeeeeak) and now I hate July in Portland (dryyyyy).
Tomorrow morning, though, I’ll be happy outdoors because we’re going blueberry picking. We found a farm up towards Mt. Hood (thanks to Dalene - check out those berries!) where blueberries are $0.75/lb.

I’ve been taking cool baths and showers, and when it’s too hot for anything, I’ll lie still and listen to books on tape so I don’t have to move or anything. (Good when the blinds are drawn to keep the sun out and you’ve only got the type of light bulbs that feel like they heat up the whole room.) Or wrap a towel around yourself and pretend you’re at the sauna.
I think I can safely say I’ve never been in heat like this without an air conditioner. Keep cool this weekend.

Wow, I didn’t know that could happen in Portland! The summer I spent a month in Eugene, I left weather here in the east that was 85 degrees and humid at 6 in the morning (it was an unusually hot stretch for us), and arrived in Portland to 70 degrees, dry, and sunny. I was so happy!! Do you have any friends with air conditioning where you could crash for the night? Otherwise, yeah, an ice cold shower for as long as you can stand, and lots of fans aimed at the bed.

the weather here inland has been super hot too - i went hiking yesterday and it was SO HOT and the trails were SO DRY it was almost hard to breath because of all the dust.
having moved here from Michigan, at first i was delighted (like Cleis) to have a mild(er), not-humid summer and to be able to plan a camping trip at any time without ever having a threat of rain. now, sometimes i would give ANYTHING for a summer thundershower!!!!

Here’s a tip for next time (that I invented when I lived in Eugene and it was hella hot one summer). Get a dishpan and fill it with ice (a big block like you can buy at some gas stations works really well). Stick the dishpan-and-ice in front of a fan, and blow the fan over the ice in the general direciton of the people in the room.
The ice cools the air right around it, and you blow that air on yourself.
