60 million acres of forest set for slaughter
Oh god, the eco-grief never stops. Administration announces no more “roadless” rule for forests (overturns Clinton-era rule that made nearly 60 million acres of national forest off-limits to road building and logging). From the SF Chronicle:
Under Clinton’s rule, the presumption was that those roadless areas would be off limits to resource exploitation.
Under Bush’s proposal, the nation’s governors would have to petition the U.S. Forest Service to block road-building in those pristine areas. The feds would then decide whether to approve the request. About 97 percent of these roadless areas are in a dozen Western states.
It was telling that Veneman made the announcement in Boise, Idaho, where Gov. Dick Kempthorne has been quite vocal in his dissatisfaction with the roadless rule. He believes it has unduly locked out logging and other economic development opportunities.

Right-eo! Good Who needs trees? I mean what good are they really? They only produce Oxygen, prevent erosion, help with producing rich soil, provide shade, provide habitats for numerous micro-systems, and a slew of other misc. things. I say cut them ALL down.. people need T.P., cardboard boxes from Amazon with shiny products, Paper to print Credit Card Applications on… don’t forget that people need to stuff their fat faces with Big Macs and how are the Millions of cows supposed to grazed with these big eye-sores in their way? Also, more roads means more roadside-meat for the Crows… isn’t anyone thinking of the crows?
Yay!

Emily:
It’s amazing, this compassionate conservativism, isn’t it? I share your disgust and fear and, believe me, so do our great-great grandchildren.
These forests are just that many more suburbs in a matter of decades, provided we have more administrations like this one. (Or is it just our culture doing its wholesale murder thing again?)
