new papers online
Whew! Not like I really had the time to do this, but I took a breather from current paper writing to update the writing section of this site. I added categorization and posted a few papers I’ve written in the past year. Newly online papers include my essay on the films of Frederick Wiseman and some women’s studies short papers from last term and the one I wrote recently on David Orr and his theories on ecological education. Check ‘em out!
In case you’re asking yourself why I’d be silly enough to publicly post my work, believe me I’ve given it some thought. I really love the idea of people having access to them for information as a lot of the papers are good basic reads on their topics. If someone learns more about the FTAA, Philip Glass, or the crisis of the foster care system by stumbling across my papers, mission accomplished. I also have no problem with students reading them and using the works cited links within to aid in researching their own papers.
Of course, I vehemently object to plagiarism and to the idea of a student claiming one of my papers as his or her own and turning it in for credit. But the thing is, every professor I know is pretty Google-savvy; they use it to sniff out plagiarists. If it was easy enough for a student to plug in a few choice keywords to find my paper, it would be pretty easy for a teacher to find my paper also. A student would have to pretty freakin’ stupid to just rip off one of my papers.
Then again, I could be the stupid one posting them on here. What do you think?

It’s a good thing, the benefits of posting your papers out weight the risks of plagiarism by quite a bit.

Not stupid at all–we need quality writing and thought on the web. If someone plagiarizes, that’s their problem.
