Well, here’s the must read of the day:

Leaked Pentagon report warns climate change may bring famine, war: report

A secret report prepared by the Pentagon (news - web sites) warns that climate change may lead to global catastrophe costing millions of lives and is a far greater threat than terrorism.

The report was ordered by an influential US Pentagon advisor but was covered up by “US defense chiefs” for four months, until it was “obtained” by the British weekly The Observer.

Climate change, peak oil, rising worldwide disenfranchisement with neo-liberalization and globalization … these are the things that signal a gigantic turning of the tide in fairly short order. Let’s hope that those of us who are aware can help soften the crashes as much as possible. In my view, the best way to prepare for what’s to come is to learn and share with others about living locally off the land and maintaining earth-conscious and spiritual practices.

Oh, and the relevance of the above story to this one is scary stuff: U.S. Air Force Plans for Future War in Space . Hmm….I wonder why they’d want to develop in that direction? Maybe because the U.S. military anticipates a time when the earth could be fairly inhabitable?

UPDATE: This article on the Pentagon report is much more comprehensive, detailing the potential fallout of climate change over the next 20 years, including the prediction that “future wars will be fought over the issue of survival rather than religion, ideology or national honor”.

If climate change is a threat to national security and the economy, then he has to act. There are two groups the Bush Administration tend to listen to, the oil lobby and the Pentagon,” added Bob Watson, chief scientist for the World Bank).

Because this is the most serious type of news I can imagine, I’m dumbfounded that almost no one else is talking or writing about it. When I did a search on the report this morning at Google news, one (ONE!) article about the leak was from the U.S. media, all the rest were from newspapers out of Australia, Oman, Phillippines, South Africa, etc. What we have here is suppression by American mainstream media.
