the weekend’s dust
I spent most of the weekend deep cleaning the house (an end-of the-school-term task). As we have two indoor/outdoor dogs, a German shepherd mix and a chow, the amount of fur and dust that accumulates on the hardwood floors of our house is atrocious. I try to keep on top of sweeping, but I don’t truly get into the corners and underneath the furniture as often as I should. We hauled in the shop vac from the garage this weekend and used the attachments to get into the darkest crevices, sucking up those hairballs with satisfying sounds.
We had about seven people over yesterday afternoon and evening for a Lord of the Rings marathon - extended editions of Fellowship of the RIng and Two Towers back to back, with many breaks. A good time was had by all and I’m even more psyched to see Return of the King now in the theater at noon on Wednesday.
Now, on to the news…I feel so out of the loop. You see, in the past year it’s gotten to the point where it’s not enough for me to just know the headlines; I feel incomplete and underinformed if I haven’t also read commentary and more in-depth indie analysis and backstory on (what I consider to be) major events. Yesterday, I only took the time to scan the headlines and skim a few mainstream articles about Saddam’s capture, and I’m looking forward to a quiet evening where I can sit and catch up.
My initial reaction is that while I am as glad as anyone that Saddam was captured, I am also leery of how the administration is going to use this in the next year to boost its whole macho image. It seems to me that Bush & Co. are anticipating to profit big-time from the capture when really, they haven’t done anything to deserve such a profit. This isn’t going to solve any of the messy issues that are going on currently in Iraq.
For those like me who are concerned about the administration’s arrogance and greed on the world stage, Saddam’s capture does nothing to appease that. I will write more on the whole thing later when I feel more articulate.
