where I’ve been
Yes, I’ve been sort of MIA since last Thursday.
Thursday night we saw Death Cab for Cutie play at the Crystal Ballroom. DCfC is one of my favorite new rock bands and judging by the crowded room, many others’ as well. They played for about 90 minutes and really rocked out on a lot of songs. However, the venue got really hot, you have to stand the whole time and and there was barely enough room around me to raise and clap my hands, so I was ready for the show to be over long before it was. One of those, “I know this is a great show and that I should be enjoying myself more, but I am just so frickin’ uncomfortable” scenarios. I do recommend them live…just not at the Crystal Ballroom.
Also on Thursday night, before the show, we went to a reading by Kate Moses at Powell’s on Hawthorne. Moses is a writer for Salon and her first novel, Wintering: A Novel of Sylvia Plath, came out this past year. We exchanged e-mails a few times last year while she was researching the book because I run PlathOnline.com, a fan site. I introduced myself to her after the reading and her reaction was very gratifying - she exclaimed, introduced me to a Plath scholar there that night and they both chatted me up for a while. I got a terrifically signed copy of the Wintering paperback, but more memorably, she pointed out to me my name in the end acknowledgements of the book. I had no idea! Very cool.
I’ve been thrilled with Bloglines, the free RSS aggregator I posted about last week. Because it’s now so much easier to keep up with all the blogs I like, I branched out and discovered a few “new” ones to enjoy. I added them to my blogroll here too: greenfairydotcom, Calpundit, donewaiting, misbehaving.net, and CultureCat. Give those folks a click!
Fall term is winding down (or ramping up, depending on how you look at it); only two weeks left. My workload includes a 6-8 page paper, half a book, two 2 page analyses, and a PowerPoint presentation. Could be worse. I registered for Winter classes today - I’ll be taking Women’s Spirituality, Leadership for Sustainability, and Globalization. I’m such a nerd I’m actually looking forward to those!
