Senator Santorum should resign
Democrats are rightfully calling for the resignation of Sen. Rick Santorum, a Republican from Pennsylvania who recently made some pretty degrading comments about homosexuals:
I have no problem with homosexuality. I have a problem with homosexual acts. As I would with acts of other, what I would consider to be, acts outside of traditional heterosexual relationships. And that includes a variety of different acts, not just homosexual. I have nothing, absolutely nothing against anyone who’s homosexual. If that’s their orientation, then I accept that…The question is, do you act upon those orientations? So it’s not the person, it’s the person’s actions. And you have to separate the person from their actions.
I find this so arrogant and insulting. How close-minded and intolerant, this belief that homosexuals should very purposely suppress this natural part of themselves and pray to “have their sin healed.” For whom? So that all the Christian right-wingers can sleep soundly and self-righteously at night? It is scary to me that there are people in powerful positions who act as if being gay as a disease and take that sickening approach that gay people need to pitied and shown the right path. I am not gay, and I don’t think it matters if one is or not in order to value individuals’ liberty and self-expression. “An ye harm none, do what thou wilt.”
Santorum is by far not the only member of the G.O.P. with an attitude toward homosexuality. (NY Times article, use login: strangechord, password: readnyt)
