There’s a rally downtown in Portland today at 4 PM. Since I really have to clean the house for my mom’s arrival late tonight, I am planning instead on attending the candlelight vigil at the Waterfront at 7 PM. Apparently, downtown San Francisco was largely shut down by protestors today!

I want to remind everyone reading this to avoid the mainstream news as much as possible during this war. Corporate media cannot be counted on to deliver accurate, unbiased, sans-propaganda news. This includes major newspapers, network news (including CNN), junky news mags (like Time), and commercial radio stations. Instead, check out your local community radio stations either on the dial or via streaming audio on the web, whcih you can listen to from anywhere (e.g. KBOO in Portland), independent papers, or web sites. Here are some great places online to follow what’s really happening that you won’t hear about from FOX News (and many of these are not necessarily anti-war):

· Iraq Journal
· CommonDreams.org
· Indymedia central - find the Indymedia site nearest you
· Dear Raed - a blog out of Baghdad
· FAIR (Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting)
· AlterNet.org
· In These Times
· ZNet

There’s a start.

Weblogs are also great to get the “real” news - it gives you more of a personal perspective on things.

Unfortunately Kevin Sites’ site (http://www.kevinsites.net/ ) is on hold for now, due to his relationship with CNN… but he was offering some great insights from Iraq.

And even here in Portland, you can hear what happens on OPB or KBOO. But it’s sometimes even better to read personal accounts - like updates from Portland Indymedia (http://portland.indymedia.org/ ) and WWeek photographer Steve getting pepper sprayed while covering the recent protests: http://www.whatdoesnotchange.org/
