late night questions

Here are a few points that bother me about this whole war thing:

  • Why does it take a $100 billion war to remove ONE person? If our military is so efficient and intelligent, can’t we find a way to just get in there and remove one bad guy without killing tons of innocent people and gobbling through tons of tax-payer money?

  • So Bush gives Saddam 48 hours to evacuate Iraq or we’ll go to war against him. Hmmm…does that mean if Saddam and his sons flee, then it’s ok for Iraq to have weapons of mass destruction (WMD)? Is this about Saddam or WMD?

  • Why has there been no official/public acknowledgement by any of the American powers that be that: 1) the U.S. was the one that gave Saddam all of these WMD in the first place; 2) our CIA was primarily responsible for putting the Ba’ath Party in power; and 3) our sanctioning of and bomb-dropping on the Iraqi people over the past twelve years has been responsible for killing millions of innocents, crippling Iraq’s structure and society, and securing Saddam’s power? Don’t people realize that the sanctions helped strengthen Saddam’s position (i.e. the weaker his people, the more power for him)? The lack of American accountability on these points is staggering. (And for the record, here’s a pic of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam fewer than 20 years ago.)

  • There’s no disputing Saddam is a bad guy. Why can’t we declare him a war criminal and try him in war crimes court or set up U.N. peacekeeping forces to monitor him? Why go to war?

  • If Bush believes that Saddam has WMD and the intent to use them, wouldn’t it be smarter to attempt to locate and destroy them prior to sending in U.S. troops? (credit here)

  • How can we talk about liberating a people we aim to bomb the hell out of first?

  • If you really support the troops, wouldn’t you want to see them not have to fight and risk their lives at all? Seems to me if I had a loved one in the military, I’d be even more adamantly against a war.

  • Can anyone think of one thing that Bush or anyone in his administration has done in the last two years to avert this war that they’ve wanted all along?
(Going to the UN was a sham. It was not to avert war, it was to get international support to attack Iraq. The world didn’t fall for it.) (credit here)

Well, those are some thoughts for now. Now you see my dilemma in supporting this war.
