Friday post (for lack of a better title)

I seem to be in this bad habit of blogging once a week. Hmmm… We had a fabulous time at the beach last weekend. Perhaps tonight I’ll get some Newport beach pics posted here.

To help prepare Jeremy prepare for his GRE, I’ve been writing three vocabulary words every few days up on our hallway white board. I pick words he doesn’t already know and make sure one or two of them are new to me as well. Then we make sure to use the words often in conversation with each other. I found a great resource this afternoon: The American Heritage College Dictionary’s 100 words that all high school graduates — and their parents — should know. Lovely, lovely words! Churlish! Bellicose! Jejune!

I just finished an interesting novel in about five days (my average) called The Lovely Bones. It’s a huge hit this summer and although I don’t normally choose my reads straight off the bestseller lists, I recently heard an intriguing interview with Alice Sebold, the author, on “Fresh Air with Terry Gross” and decided to borrow it from the library. The book is narrated by a raped and murdered 14-year old looking down from Heaven. She watches how her family and friends deal with her tragic death and learns to let go of them over time as they let go of her. There are a few schmaltzy sections that I could’ve done without, but overall, the novel is haunting and real.
