30 years, 6 days and counting

Well it finally happened, I turned 30 last week. I’m still caught between it is no big deal and AAAAAAHHHHH. Sometimes feeling both at the same time. Anyway, my birthday party was very nice, had a bunch of people from my various communities (family, friends, techies, Landmark folks, …) and the cool part was that all the communities blended together. On a related note, I announced a couple years ago that I had ‘moved’ my birthday to the first saturday after spring quarter finals, having gotten sick of having my birthday (6/12) being during finals week for as long as I could remember. Yes, my birthday has been on a weekend at some point, but it doesn’t feel that way.

Fittingly enough I was attending Usenix’s annual Technical Conference in Monterey, CA the week of my natural birthday. BTW, the conference was extremely good, but I spent most of my free time finishing my final paper for my final paper for my graduate GIS2 course. While staying up til 3am two nights in a row wasn’t much fun, getting an ‘A’ was very nice, considering that spring quarter I was also taking Oracle Database Administration I, head coaching the SELP, working full time, and actually remembering to get a garden going early enough (but we planted way too much lettuce). Speaking of the garden, to keep the dogs out of it we put up a fence, but this year we put the garden in the middle the yard, basically setting up a dog track in reverse. The funny part is George likes to chase the water coming from the hose when we are watering the garden and tries to intercept the water when I water the strawberry and cucumber patch while standing in the garden. If I time it right I can get him running laps around the garden and when we walk him afterward he doesn’t pull as hard.

In other news and to put a structure in place, I will be posting at least once a week from now on. I have been meaning to do this/have a journal for a while and turning 30 got my attention. However, I need to get to bed, but I’ll write about the Conference in the morning. +cheers
