Christmas countdown

So, it’s Christmas a few days from now….Christmas has ceased to be any kind of real deal for me since I was about 17 or so. Christmas as an adult has revolved around an occasion to goof off for a day and eat better-than-usual food. For some reason, Christmas has also been a movie kind of day - a few years ago, I saw “Mighty Aphrodite” on Christmas, a few years before that, “Bugsy”. All decidedly non-holiday films. This year I have no plans but to visit the O’Learys (Jeremy’s family here in Portland) and eat better-than-usual food and drink all the cocoa and peppermint schnapps we can handle. Jer and I even make a silent pact not to get each other Christmas gifts - saves money and we own enough stuff already.

Loved, loved, loved “The Fellowship of the Ring”. Perfect actors for the parts, breathtaking scenery and set designs, also the film, I felt, really captured the sense of danger and aching of the book. There’s a vulnerability and authenticity present in the movie, without which it would not have been as memorable and endearing. Elijah Wood as Frodo just broke my heart…Ian McKellan as Gandalf was flawless, transparent. I can relate to Peter Jackson’s sensibilities as a director - he chooses shots and expressions and taps into atmospheres I would have. I really enjoy his films for that reason.

However, I am disappointed to see “Fellowship” not nominated for more Golden Globes. What’s up with that? No acting nominations?
